Taneja Group backs disk-based storage

Research carried out by Taneja Group has thrown weight behind claims that disk-based backup devices have long-term benefits and strong restore capabilities, despite the constant emergence and availability of many different solutions in the storage market.

The results identified a number of emerging trends and expectations for disk-based backup, including the need to address shrinking backup windows; increase data restore speed and increase restore reliability.

In addition, the Taneja Group discovered the emergence of a "disk tier" in the storage hierarchy. It claims that disk-based backup is not seen as a replacement to tape-based systems but instead, users can achieve increased flexibility through disk-based backup while tape remains critical for long-term archive and off-site storage.

Arun Taneja, founder and consulting analyst of Taneja Group said. "The resulting collective analysis, which we believe is the most comprehensive to date on this technology, provides detailed reinforcement of our opinions that disk-based backup and restore is providing significant value to end users, and that we are only just beginning to see the transformative impact of disk on the world of data protection."

David Kenyon, director of enterprise product marketing of Quantum's storage systems business unit, explained why he was thrilled with research based on the Quantum's DX-Series.

The findings found Quantum's DX-Series to meet many of the emerging trends and expectations mentioned above.

"The detailed findings contained in Taneja Group's research are consistent with feedback we receive from DX-Series customers every day. This validates Quantum's strategy to provide backup and long-term measurable benefits."
