Aussie businesses hit by low IT morale

Recent research by the Meta Group has found that there is a high level of low IT employee morale in Australian companies, which could lead to lower productivity and less company value, if it is not treated.

The "2004 IT Staffing and Compensation Guide", carried out by Meta Group, Inc., involved 650 companies and found that 72 percent of these companies experienced low morale with its IT staff.

About 45 percent of these companies have now started to implement employee recognition programs to boost morale, while 40 percent have also increased skill development initiatives.

Maria Schafer, senior program director with executive directions at Meta Group, and author of the annual IT Staffing and Compensation Guide, said. "Working through this prolonged recession, which has seen budget cuts across the enterprise, numerous staff cutbacks and general sector uncertainty, has definitely taken its toll on IT employee morale.

"The combination of these factors creates a difficult situation for the IT organisation: productivity is hurt by having fewer people, fewer investment dollars for projects, and a perception that companies do not focus on retention."

She added that IT companies need to address this problem proactively. She said that IT organisations need to take a broader view of these issues and turn them into challenges to inspire new behaviours and better business performance.

68 percent of companies surveyed, however, indicated that they conduct employee satisfaction surveys, while another 38 percent use the performance review process to gain feedback from the employees.
