Veritas buys Invio to boost standardisation

Veritas has bought Invio Software Inc, for US$35 million in cash to standardise and automate storage processes, server needs and data protection requirements.

Veritas already uses Invio's automation engine in its Veritas CommandCentral Service 4.0, which enables utility computing by offering standardised and automated functions.

It has an intuitive "point-and-click" interface which allows IT managers to select from a broad range of out-of-the-box process templates and customise them to define, manage and automate IT processes for their organisation.

Workflows can be applied to define rules for application, and infrastructure requirements, for example, ensuring databases also use the same storage configuration.

Best practices and company policies can be attached to align IT services with the evolving needs of the business.

Jamie Gruener, senior analyst of The Yankee Group said. "IT organisations are faced today with inconsistent processes and siloed organisations - creating barriers to efficiency. Process automation technology empowers IT organisations to simplify and standardise the way they manage and deliver IT services, enabling them to more effectively define and manage the cost of services while reducing the chance of manual error and driving down expenses.

"Utility computing is all about consistent and automated service delivery and Invio's technology is a powerful extension to Veritas' portfolio. This is a real win for customers and puts the other storage management competitors on notice."

Using the process automation engine with CommandCentral Service software allows users to create and automate IT processes by linking together the capabilities of Veritas OpForce, CommandCentral Storage, Storage Foundation and NetBackup.

Sean Garvey, president and CEO of NovusCG added. "IT professionals are continuously challenged by corporate mandates to deliver higher quality service levels at a lower cost. The seamless integration of the Invio process automation engine, as part of Veritas CommandCentral Service software, provides a powerful tool to automate complex, repetitive tasks within the context of flexible IT workflow definitions.

"Properly implemented, this can have a massive impact on the quality and efficiency of service delivery. We are currently engaged with several clients who are implementing this technology for both storage and server provisioning."

Veritas believes that Invio's process automation technology adds another strategic capability to its utility computing portfolio, helping IT organisations to dynamically deliver services that are measurable, accountable and aligned with business needs.
