Instant messaging for businesses

Instant messaging for businesses

Microsoft has made a big step towards providing users with the ability to communicate across different networks by planning to open up its online messaging service used by businesses to America Online inc. and Yahoo Inc's systems.

Unfortunately, users of MSN will not have access to this system at the moment.

Microsoft'messaging software enables businesses to install instant messaging inside of corporate networks. These messages can then be monitored and saved in the same way as normal emails.

The instant messaging service will be available as an extra feature on the next version of Microsoft software. It will be called the Live Communications Server, and will be due out later this year.

John Durant, the editor and content strategist at the Microsoft Office Development Centre explained the system in more detail. "Live Communications Server is a platform upon which companies can run their own enterprise instant messaging (IM) network, address security concerns related to public services, and manage the IM usage of employees more effectively.

"With Live Communications Server, applications within the Microsoft Office System and Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies include IM "presence" built right in menus and features. Thus, these applications display user online status allowing you to share documents, presentations, thoughts, and so much more, all in real-time without switching applications."

Businesses have wanted this service for a long time, but have been reluctant to approve this idea in the workplace because of security concerns and abuse by employees.

Microsoft hopes that these same businesses will now have complete faith in the Live Communications Server.
