Veritas backing Linux operation on Intel platform

Veritas has extended the support of its storage management and clustering products to the Intel Itanium 2 platform on Red Hat Linux 3.0 with the introduction of its Foundation Suite 2.2 and Cluster Server 2.2 on Itanium architecture for Linux.

Veritas says the move signifies its growing commitment to making Linux enterprise-ready.

"We’re committed to working with Veritas to provide customers with enterprise solutions for deployment in Linux server environments running mission-critical applications,” said Richard Wirt, general manager of the Intel software and solutions group.

According to market intelligence firm IDC, the market for Itanium-based servers shipped with Linux is forecasted to grow to $2 billion by 2008.

"As Linux is increasingly seen as a platform for important enterprise applications, scalability, reliability and availability of the platform increase in importance as well," said Dan Kusnetzky, IDC's vice president of system software research. "Veritas, long known for its clustering, availability and virtual storage software, is following through on its public commitment to extend its storage management and high availability product portfolio to support Intel Itanium-based platforms on Linux. Organisations can evaluate Linux for Itanium-based platforms knowing that their requirements for scalability, reliability and availability can be satisfied."

“Customers looking to run enterprise workloads on Linux have been asking leading ISVs like Veritas to bring support to the Itanium architecture on Linux,” said Mark Bregman, executive vice president of product operations at Veritas. “Veritas is excited to be working with Intel to deliver this to our customers with our enterprise-proven solution set of storage management and high availability software products.”
