HP eases email archiving compliance

Hewlett-Packard has launched itself into email archiving for the first time by releasing software that can search for emails stored in a server by subject and content lines for the benefit of companies concerned with compliance.

The Reference Information Storage System (RISS) is a bundle of software, server and hardware for archiving, indexing and retrieving data based on the Persist technology bought by HP last year.

It is the first system to include the storage grid capabilities HP has been working towards for years.

RISS links Persist's archiving technology with HP ProLiant x86-based servers and MSA storage to allow emails to be archived and indexed.

Emails are set to grow in numbers because of recent legislation, but the Persist software is designed to cope with the increase. It digitally signs and timestamps any data it stores on Write Once Read Many or WORM disks. This can be used to show that the content has not changed, which will help with compliance needs.

Duplicate copies can also be avoided and users can search for emails via Microsoft Outlook and a web browser.

Other features include: Data can be filed according to different characteristics and types; attachments from specific email senders can also be automatically migrated to the archive and deleted from the recepient's inbox and .pst files can be consolidated into a central email archive stored in the RISS grid.
