Blue sky ideas for Sony laser discs

Sony is making a major push to roll out its future storage products as blue laser optical disc technology because they are five times the capacity of DVDs and 32 times the capacity of CDs.

The Professional Disc for DATA (ProDATA) contains 23GB of storage capacity and can be fitted onto a single-sided optical disc by blue laser technology.

Sony hopes the advanced technology can be used to support critical data in medical imaging, email archiving, enterprise content management, multimedia projects, graphic design and audio/video editing.

One of the advantages of these discs is their ability to provide removable non-erasable, non-rewritable media at the same cost as magnetic disks.

According to Peter Gerr, an analyst from Enterprise Storage Group, optical storage has experienced medium success in industries such as media/entertainment, financial services, and the government, but this new blue laser technology will give optical storage a boost.

However, he does not expect that the discs will compete with disk-based storage for first class capacity, but it will be an asset for companies interested in removable storage requirements.

Sony's new products will be compatible with the following environments: internal SCSI, external SCSI, and external USB 2.0 versions.

The media will also be expected to have stored data up to 50 years.
