Online storage increases in popularity

A recent survey conducted in the US has revealed that consumers are becoming more interested in using online storage for backing up important files to a location outside of their homes.

A Dallas consumer technology research firm found that 52 percent of people responded favourably to using online storage for this purpose.

A self-employed writer from Pacifica has used online storage company Xdrive for the last six months to store large documents that prevent him from clogging up his email with extremely large attachments.

He has also used the location to back up files which he needs to share with other people.

The need for online storage looks set to increase now with the millions of MP3s and digital photographs beginning to overload home hard drives and laptops increasing in popularity too.

Xdrive and Files Anywhere, which also provides online storage, allow users to create an Internet archive of their most important files.

FilesAnywhere currently offers storage starting from 100 megabytes for $4 per month, but Xdrive is fighting back by offering subscribers a minimum of $10 per month for 500 megabytes.

In addition, Yahoo is getting in on the act too. It recently allowed users of its photo-sharing service an unlimited amount of space for digital photographs and it plans to release 100 megabytes of free space for email subscribers later this year.
