Disk backup apes tape

EMC is hoping to build a market place of customers for its new disk library system that require more speed and reliability from their backup than tape can provide, and who aren't averse to paying a premium for it either!

The Clariion Disk Library system is being touted by EMC as an alternative to traditional tape backup systems that may not be meeting requirements in terms of performance.

"It's faster than tape, and it's more available that tape," said Chuck Hollis, EMC's vice president of platform marketing.

One thing it isn't though is cheaper than tape, with the system expected to come in at around 50 percent more expensive that a comparable tape system. EMC is pinning its hopes on customers being attracted by the significant performance benefits.

With a single-stream performance of up to 80MB/sec, EMC claims that in typical usage scenarios, the Clariion Disk Library delivers approximately 30 to 60 percent faster backup and 90 percent faster restore performance than taper, depending on configurations.

The system also employs in-band data compression and dynamic storage allocation, allowing users to scale capacity and increase the usable storage by up to three times.

Recognising that tape will remain the primary medium for long-term offline storage, the Clariion Disk Library can facilitate the final data movement to physical tapes in native format, using an automated process to determine the specific data and time required to move to tape.
