Canto's EJaP a quick-fire hit in corporate and education sectors

Canto recently announced at AIIM in New York that its step toward Java and its new Embedded Java PlugIn (EJaP) technology has found wide acceptance among corporate customers and in the education market.

Canto introduced its customisation technology based on Java technologies last October and has since seen an enormous increase in system integrators deploying it when creating Enterprise and DAM solutions for medium to large organisations.

EJaP technology unleashes the power of Java while reducing Digital Asset Management development costs for system integrators. Canto has also extended its commitment to Java by introducing new trainings for Canto Certified Java Application Specialists.

Canto now provides a complete development platform for Digital Asset Management, spanning all major operating systems and the Internet. Cumulus allows users to efficiently manage all kinds of digital assets, be it multimedia files or office documents.

"Many companies out there still have good reasons to choose native applications, while the Internet has its obvious advantages for certain solutions too. The way system integrators can now build cross-platform solutions with EJaP, customer solutions will become more integrated, powerful and complete," says Jennifer Neumann, CEO of Canto. "We have consciously chosen Java as the basis for our new technology because of its broad market success and superior technological approach. Furthermore, it is the only true cross-platform approach available, something that has been clearly demanded by our customers."

(crosshead) How EJaPs work

While the Cumulus products are still optimised for a specific operating system they run on, EJaPs are Java code that runs within the Cumulus application. This new approach is unique because EJaPs are tightly integrated into native applications.

Among other things EJaPs can do:

- modify the application's user interface, such as menu bar and toolbar.- bring up their own dialog boxes and windows.- manipulate internal application objects.- use callback methods to monitor, filter and replace Cumulus functions.

Solutions previously built using AppleScript and OLEAutomation can be adapted to EJaP. If they prefer, system integrators can continue to use their development environments, but will have to change the way they invoke a Cumulus command.
