Hitachi wins ABC deal

Hitachi Data Systems has won a multi-million dollar deal to provide the Australian Broadcasting Corporation with twelve terabytes of storage to support their new media and internet services.

Hitachi Data Systems landed this contract, despite competition from three other storage vendors. Their Storage Area Network and Networked Attached Storage solution offered the lowest cost of ownership over five years.

They also offered to manage data growth cost-effectively; consolidate server and storage environments and maintain internal Service Level Agreements.

Michael Cremen, General Manager of Hitachi Data Systems in Australia and New Zealand said: "Hitachi Data Systems is pleased to be selected as ABC's technology partner. We look forward to growing this relationship and helping them maximise their return on investment in our storage solution."

Hitachi Data Systems will also use the technology and services of five other partners - Network Appliance, SecureData Group, StorageTek, Veritas and Brocade.

Simon Green, Managing Director of Network Appliance Australia and New Zealand added: "The ABC contract marks an important step in the evolution of storage network collaboration in Australia. We look forward to working closely with Hitachi Data Systems and the other project partners to ensure the consolidation solution being deployed by the ABC maximises its storage utilisation across NAS and SAN environments while driving down the total cost of ownership."

ABC's Sydney data centre will have a Hitachi Thunder 9580V, the industry's only ultra high-end modular storage array, which will be attached to both a NetApp GF940C Clustered Gateway Filer for the purpose of file sharing and Brocade Silkworms switches for ABC's Application Servers. Hitachi Thunder 9530Vs will also be used in ABC's offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Hobart and Darwin.

The storage network will be managed by Hitachi's HiCommand management software, providing a single access and management point across the network. Hitachi Global Solution Services will implement and support the solution that includes consolidated backup to an automated tape library silo using Veritas' NetBackup DataCentre and BusinessServer Software in the distributed locations.

Fred Spark, Manager of System Management Services at ABC said: "Hitachi Data Systems demonstrated their commitment and capability to deliver a SAN and NAS solution that would meet our growing data requirements. We selected Hitachi Data Systems over other storage vendors because they understood our needs and presented a best of breed solution that will help us manage our storage environment around Australia more effectively now and in the future."
