EMC claims its ILM jigsaw is complete

Enterprise storage provider EMC says it now has all the necessary building blocks in place to deliver complete end-to-end Information Lifecycle management (ILM) solutions to the enterprise, thanks to its recent spate of acquisitions.

Speaking at a press conference in Sydney to outline how the recently acquired Legato, Documentum and VMWare would knit together under the EMC umbrella, Steve Redman, Managing Director of EMC Australia and New Zealand, said: "When we started talking about ILM and what we wanted to deliver to the customer, we estimated that we had between six and nine of the fifteen elements needed to deliver a complete ILM solution. Now, as a result of our recent acquisitions, we believe that we have all fifteen."

Redman, who was joined at the event by Legato's Intercontinental Vice President, Stephen Lloyd-Jones, and Documentum's ANZ Managing Director, Graham Pullen, also claimed that the acquisitions put them way ahead of their nearest rivals in the ILM space.

"I would say that HP is our closest competitor, and even it only has around six of the fifteen elements needed to provide a total ILM solution, which is a long way back from what we can offer."

Redman added that EMC would not preclude its recently acquired companies from maintaining existing partnerships and establishing new partnerships with rival storage vendors such as HP and HDS.

"We realise that many customers who do not have EMC hardware will still want to integrate their hardware with Legato and Documentum products and we welcome that."

Graham Pullen, ANZ Managing Director of Documentum, echoed those sentiments. "We have a number of very long and productive relationships, particularly with HP, who we have worked with on many projects over a number of years. We will continue to grow those relationships – being part of EMC will not impact on this. If anything, our ties with our other partners have become stronger since we became part of EMC."
