ACCC cracks down on internet scams

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is leading consumer protection agencies from 24 countries over the next three days to crackdown on internet scams.

They are targeting websites which promote get rich quick schemes, work at home schemes and free offers. People are enticed by the lure of easy money and opportunities to work from home.

But the common pitfalls include start up fees, added costs, and grossly over exaggerated earning potential, which often results in thousands of dollars being lost after somebody has poured so much money in these internet scams.

ACCC Chairman, Mr Graeme Samuel said: "The ACCC received an increasing number of complaints and inquiries about internet scams throughout the year of 2003. The internet is prime territory for scammers around the globe who seek to take advantage of international boundaries to avoid detections.

"Scammers are increasingly using the internet to try and make a fast dollar and take advantage of vulnerable consumers."

The International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network is a network of consumer protection authorities of 31 countries which takes action to prevent international marketing practices from deceiving users.

It encourages cooperative efforts by member authorities to tackle consumer problems connected with cross-border transactions in both good and services.

Here are some tips to avoid being caught:

1. Avoid promises of instant wealth, 'free' gifts, incredible discounts and bargains.2. Read all the terms and conditions and fine print.3. Be very wary of testimonials claiming astounding results.4. Ask around, get professional advice. Research the business: do an internet search on the name of the product/company, verify any contact and company details.
