Increased internet security for viruses

Increased virus internet security

MessageLabs has suggested that viruses, such as Mydoom should be blocked at the internet level, before they can corrupt machines and cost companies so much money.

They believe that scanning services have the ability to block email viruses and spam before they reach the users's telco or ISP provider's system.

MessageLabs' Technical Director of the Asia Pacific, David Banes, said: "Companies that use an anti-virus service like MessageLabs to intercept email at the internet level don't risk surcharges for excess data usage caused by a spammer as a result of Mydoom or any other virus.

"Our global internet network will intercept email viruses, worms trojans and other malware while they're in transit between the virus sender and the recipient, thus stopping these threats before they can enter a firm's corporate boundary and infect its servers."

He also compared it to Australia trying to guard its borders from the bird flu virus by being vigilant in hospitals, rather than airport immigration controls.

His response to whether current anti-virus solutions are losing the battle was this: "We're not suggesting that companies give up on their traditional desktop anti-virus solutions, but a layered approach that includes Internet-level filtering, like MessageLabs, is going to prove to be both cost-effective and socially responsible way for companies to deal with viruses."

He believes that MessageLabs' filtering has both financial benefits to business by reducing their bandwitdth costs as well as far-reaching social benefits by ensuring that a company's computers will not spread the infection to others externally.
