Veritas target mid-market, drops Business Server

Veritas Software has replaced its unpopular Business Server software package with its new NetBackup 5.0 Server, which the storage software vendor will be pitching at the small to medium business market.

Veritas admitted that the old Business Server product left customers concerned that they may grow out of it should their business grow a little bit. The new software is more scalable, has additional features to the old software and offers a greater level of integration with Veritas' other offerings, such as Veritas CommandCentral and Data Lifecycle Manager. It also operates in Unix, Windows, Linux and NetWare environments, helping to drive down the costs of protecting data.

"Mid-size organisations are subject to the same data management challenges as enterprise organisations, but on a different scale. They must react to data growth while still protecting their current environment from downtime or disasters," said Nancy Marrone-Hurley, Senior Analyst, Enterprise Storage Group. "A data protection solution that targets the needs of mid-size organisations can help ensure business continuity and allow users to affordably maintain the integrity of their data and applications."

Brenda Zawatski, Vice President of Product Marketing at Veritas, added: "Veritas understands the needs of growing organisations to have reliable data protection for all critical applications. NetBackup Server provides backup and recovery capabilities to scale and optimise IT environments while still maintaining cost efficiency."

Menawhile, Veritas has also beefed up its executive team in Australia and New Zealand with the creation of two new roles – Head of Channels, Australia and New Zealand, and Regional Sales Director, Australia and New Zealand.

Bruce Lakin has been appointed to the channel role, while Craig Scroggie takes up the sales post.

Commenting on the appointments, Steven Leonard, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Veritas Asia Pacifc and Japan, said: "Bruce has many years of general management experience, and with his capabilities in developing and managing businesses, he has also been appointed as Acting Managing Director Australia and New Zealand, assuming responsibility for the successful day-to-day operation of the Veritas business in Australia and New Zealand.

"Together, Bruce and Craig bring significant industry knowledge and experience to the region, and I am confident their leadership will grow our customer and channel partner relationships as we focus on our company strategy of enabling utility computing through software."
