Gateway to make storage debut

Gateway – a company known for its manufacture of personal computers – will take another step down its roadmap away from its PC making past when it makes its first foray into the data storage hardware market.

Company Chief Executive Ted Waitt said the vendor would unveil two new storage products at next week's Comdex technology trade show, to be held in Las Vegas.

One of the products will be a low end device, while at the high end, the company is to announce a partnership with an as yet unnamed vendor on an offering for that market.

The company, which is looking to target the SME sector as well as the public sector and corporate markets, said that despite the shrinking margins in storage hardware, it still remained a better prospect than the PC market, which has been the subject of price wars that have eaten away at margins.

In addition to its move into the storage market, the company is also making a big play to establish itself as a leading player in the consumer electronics market, having also announced the introduction of new TVs digital cameras, a DVD recorder and a digital music player.
