StorageTek is collaborating with Fuji Photo Film USA on the development of next generation tape storage systems using Fuji's 'Nanocubic' technology.

It is anticipated that the technology will be able to deliver digital videotape media and data cartridges that can store up to one terabyte of data.

"Today's announcement is another key endorsement of our Nanocubic technology and continues Fujifilm's innovation in enterprise-class tape storage solutions," said Yasuo Tanaka, President and CEO, Fuji Photo Film USA. "After nearly forty years of tape innovation, Nanocubic technology is the latest in a long line of Fujifilm efforts to extend the importance of tape as a storage medium."

"Our ability to provide our customers with a wide breadth of advanced tape automation solutions is one of the key components of our Information Lifecycle Management strategy," said Gary Francis, corporate vice president and general manager, Automated Tape Solutions, StorageTek. "Our partnership with Fujifilm will provide us with access to their innovative Nanocubic technology to help us develop our next generation tape solutions for our customers."

Fujifilm Nanocubic technology results in a tape with an ultra-thin layer coating that produces higher resolution for recording digital data, ultra-low noise and high signal-to-noise ratios that are ideal for magneto-resistive (MR) heads. This is achieved through the following:

Coating technology: Nanocubic technology employs an advanced precision coating process that can control the thickness of the magnetic layer on a nanometer scale.Particle technology: Two types of magnetic particles were developed for Nanocubic technology, both tens of nanometers in size: magnetic needle-shaped metal particles and plate-shaped barium-ferrite magnetic particles.

Dispersion technology: Nanocubic technology uses a special organic binder material that has the ability to thoroughly disperse the particles in the coating solution so that a uniformly packed structure of the layer is realised.
