EMC adds Windows support to NAS line

Storage systems, software and services provider EMC has introduced a series of new mid-tier network-attached storage (NAS) products and enhancements, including a device which supports Microsoft's new Windows Storage Server 2003.

With the move, the vendor seems to be pinning its hopes on a continuation of the slow momentum of NAS technology appearing more and more in mainstream data centres, where once it was largely only in the domain of workgroups and departmental systems.

Clive Gold, Marketing Director at EMC, said that mid-tier customers will now be able to have an open NAS solution, together with EMC's CLARiiON software, giving users high availability and management functions.

"Previously, they had to either go towards the low end, where you had a bunch of disks, or you had to go to the higher end to a proprietary NAS vendor."

Gold added that convergence was a key factor in the company's latest product rollout, which includes the NetWin 200 NAS system and the Celerra NS600G.

"The new Celerra NS600G drives that convergence of having a network connection as well as a storage area network (SAN) connection into the same storage backend. This is applicable through all organisations, with lower-end organisations looking to consolidate file servers, and at the higher end, they have been using NAS for a while and are saying that they need NAS and SAN but only want one type of storage. We deliver that, because it is only the connection and not the storage that is different."

David Donatelli, EMC's Executive Vice President of Storage Platforms Operations, said, "The NAS market has undergone significant change and is now demanding high-end NAS capabilities in the mid-tier. With today's announcement, EMC is answering the call. EMC gives customers the most choice and flexibility as they build out their networked storage infrastructures to address both current and future business requirements."
