StorageTek's Echo to be heard in Australia

In a whistlestop visit to Australia, Pat Martin, Chairman and CEO of data storage solution provider StorageTek said the company's EchoView iSCSI-based device is soon for these shores.

The device, which uses host-based software agents that send data via iSCSI to the EchoView server, allowing it to restore a given data set from any point in time, started shipping in the US four months ago. EchoView also has the capability to back up data to tape, removing this burdensome task from application servers.

Martin, who joined StorageTek in 2000, after 23 years with the Xerox Corporation, said the vendor was focusing on much more that simply implementing such products as Echoview, but was instead taking a far more holistic approach as part of the company's Information Lifecycle Management strategy.

"We are working with customers to examine the usage of their data in order to help them develop policies for storage management and then implement the appropriate solutions. We are also developing a very robust services business around that."

Martin added that the whole reason why lifecycle management is so compelling for organisations at present is down to the fact that "today, for every dollar you spend on hardware, another four dollars needs to be spend on people, software and services. If unchecked, that four dollars could balloon to well over five dollars for every dollar spent on hardware."
