IBM unveils SAN file system

IBM has announced the availability of storage software technology designed to simplify the sharing of data files and automate the management of data.

Based on technology developed by IBM Research, the IBM TotalStorage SAN File System is designed to provide a single, centralised point of control to manage files and databases.

The system is targeted at transforming the economics of SAN (Storage Area Network) storage by allowing customers to better use existing hardware investments through a software virtualisation layer.

IBM says the system has an architecture that can eventually support "petabytes of data," with a single petabyte the equivalent of 1.5 million CDs.

The technology is part of IBM's on-demand computing strategy, the concept of which is that customers have IT resources available to hand when they need them, but only pay for them when they are in use.

The system will be available worldwide from November 14. IBM has also created a new storage software sales force to "help accelerate customers' understanding and use of IBM's storage software," according to the vendor.
