All go at NCR

It's been a busy time for NCR, both globally and locally, with NCR Australia launching a managed services offering and its parent signing a global alliance with Sun Microsystems.

NCR and Sun will work together deliver solutions and services offerings for retail, financial and telecommunications customers worldwide. As part of the agreement, NCR will work with Sun to develop joint solutions for targeted vertical markets and will sell and deliver installation and support services for Sun's full line of entry to mid-range servers, storage systems and through complementary infrastructure services solutions.

"The alliance between Sun and NCR was enhanced to provide complete IT solutions for the retail, financial and telecommunications industries. These solutions will be developed around Sun technology and maintained by NCR's complementary global service capability," said Christine Tenneson, program manager, Network Lifecycle Services for IDC.

The Sun and NCR IT infrastructure services solutions are designed to help banks, retailers and other organisations install and operate a complete IT infrastructure with decreased risk.

"This expanded relationship provides NCR's retail, financial and telecommunications services customers' access to Sun's leading network computing technology," said Sherle Webb, vice president of Global Partner Sales at Sun.

"Sun is already one of our key technology, solutions and services partners, and this global alliance helps meet our customers' growing demand for Sun systems, including its market-leading servers, storage and software," said Gerry Gagliardi, senior vice president of NCR Worldwide Customer Services.  "Our ability to provide complementary global hardware and software support for the Sun platform gives our joint customers greater flexibility with IT infrastructure operations."

Meanwhile, NCR Australia said its managed services offering is designed to help customers improve their operational efficiency and user productivity, while reducing overall support costs.

The business intelligence behind NCR Managed Services is a combination of detailed service transaction data and mining tools based on NCR's Teradata data warehouse. NCR provides its customers with a detailed analysis of all service events - from the time a call is taken and a diagnosis is made, to the determination of the precise parts and engineering skills needed to correct a problem.

"NCR Managed Services customers will experience greater operational improvements than they could expect from traditional approaches," according to Noel Pettitt, south pacific area general manager of NCR Worldwide Customer Services. "With NCR's global presence, industry-specific expertise and insight into service operations, we're helping our customers make informed business decisions that drive enhanced value to their clients.

"Outsourcing and managed IT services are among the strongest growth market areas of information technology around the world and in Australia. Many customers readily recognise the value of cost containment and great efficiency brought to bear by third-party service providers. Outsourcing and managed IT services may provide a way for companies to invest less time and expense in IT activities that may not be considered core business functions."
