IDC: Disk storage market booming in Asia-Pac

The worldwide storage market in its entirety may be described as sluggish at best, but that's certainly not the case for the disk storage system market in Asia Pac (excluding Japan), with analyst group IDC reporting revenues in the region totalling US$530 million (AUD$780.4 million) for the second quarter of 2003, up 8.2 percent from US$490.5 (AUD$721.5 million) in the first quarter of 2003.

Customers continue to show increased interest in networked storage due to the scalability of storage area networks and network attached storage," said Graham Penn, Director, Storage Research, IDC Asia/Pacific. "Although many organisations in Asia Pacific have are yet to adopt a networked storage infrastructure, networking of an organisation's storage resource is proving to become an effective requirement for organisations seeking to better manage the ever increasing amount of data that are required for today's business operations."

Overall in Q2 2003, HP maintained its leadership in total storage end-user revenue with 27.2 percent market share, followed by IBM with 26.1 percent. Sun, EMC and HDS complete the top five.

In Australia, IDC expects the total new storage capacity to be shipped during 2003 to come in at around 14,480 terabytes, up a whopping 43.6 percent on 2002.

"There are a number of drivers for this growth," added Penn. "The principal drivers are email, databases, networking applications, file print applications, web applications in SMEs and data warehouse/data marts for medium and large organisations."
