Storage on the go to reshape business

Low cost, high capacity portable storage devices area set to transform the way mobile users interact with applications.

That is the view of analyst group META, which has just issued a report predicting the future of portable storage and the impact it will have on industry.

It is considered that data storage devices will negate the need for transportation of mobile platforms - such as notebooks and PDAs – in many cases. For example, if a user goes to a meeting to give a presentation, they can simply load the presentation into a compact memory device and plug it into a computer attached to a projector when they arrive, rather than lugging around their own notebook.

META expects such devices to be deployed primarily within the enterprise, as well as at public access points such as airports, hotels and conference centres.

John Brand, vice president, technology research services, META Group, says that while the portable storage system offers many benefits, there are still a number of issues to be resolved, particularly around industry standards and security.

"The portable storage market in Australia is very fragmented at the moment. It's a bit like the storage in your house – you can never have enough and you can necessarily find what you want when you need it and it certainly doesn't mean that it's secure.

"People need to be aware of the lack of security in being able to store vast amounts of data on very small storage devices. We believe that those devices will evolve very quickly over the next couple of years into more intelligent devices that allow for more than simply mass storage."
