StorageTek's hybrid system increases storage efficiency

Data storage vendor StorageTek has continued its drive to help enterprises control the number of tape drives in their storage system with the introduction of Virtual Storage Manager 4.

The VSM 4 solution combines tape drives, hard disk drives and management software that allows users to increase their capacity and process data more quickly without having to fork out for a complete hard disk drive system.

It uses advanced virtual tape technology to help customers fully optimise tape operations. VSM 4 supports multiple StorageTek automated tape technologies and was designed to extend the value of customers' investments in StorageTek products. It conserves existing tape storage infrastructure and media while significantly reducing the amount of floor space required for traditional tape storage systems.

"StorageTek believes that businesses must have the right information on the right device at the right price and time in order to successfully and cost-effectively manage their business," says Philip Belcher, managing director for StorageTek Australia/New Zealand.

"The new performance and functionality enhancements built into VSM 4 help customers make the most of their current investments and allow them to maximise their existing infrastructure. At the same time, VSM 4 offers a wide range of flexible disaster recovery/business continuity features - and DR/BC is certainly one of the biggest IT concerns faced by businesses today."

Meanwhile, StorageTek has released the latest in its line of disk storage devices it says are designed to reduce the impact of escalating storage demands on companies.

The D220 has the ability to scale from 730 GB to 6.1 TB in capacity, allowing businesses with flat to shrinking IT budgets to continue to manage rapid increases in data.

"Our customers have told us they need robust, high-performance storage solutions at every layer of the enterprise," says Philip Belcher, managing director for StorageTek Australia/New Zealand. "The D220 offers customers a better alternative to budget-restrictive purchases for department and work group-level storage, providing effective management of business critical data throughout its lifecycle for even more end-users."
