Quantum has introduced a new software suite which is designed to warn users of potential malfunctions on their backup tapes.

DLTSage has been created with a view to eliminating the guesswork and uncertainty of managing data protection systems by providing the information necessary to better manage, predict and proactively prevent storage system errors.

"Essentially, this suite of products provides more intelligence in the backup and restore process," says Alex Tan, Quantum's Sales and Marketing Managing Director, Asia Pacific.

The software suite interprets the tape drive's error correction code messages and then decides whether errors are being caused by the tape media or the drive itself. The software issues a warning when tapes are on the verge of wearing out, giving users the opportunity to take corrective action before serious problems occur.

The first two components of the new DLTSage suite, available on free download from Quantum's website (http://www.dltsage.com), are iTalk, which will let users of Quantum's high-end line of Super DLTtape drives run these diagnostics over an infrared link, and xTalk, which works with both Super DLTtape drives and the lower-cost Value DLTtape drives, and communicates via standard storage interfaces such as SCSI or Fibre Channel.
