HP leads Asia-Pac external storage market

Hewlett-Packard has emerged as the leading vendor of external storage in Asia Pacific for 2002, capturing a 25 per cent share of the US$1.175 billion dollar market.

According to Gartner analysts, 2002 saw organisations in the region placing a greater emphasis on information security as part of an ongoing review of disaster recovery and business continuity.

"Organisations are looking for ways to ensure the integrity and security of their information," said Phil Sargeant, research director for servers and storage for the Asia/Pacific Computing Platforms group. "Mechanisms such as data replication were seen as ways of addressing these issues. Data-replication requirements, whether the information was replicated locally, remotely or both, was one factor that drove storage capacity needs in the Asia/Pacific region in 2002."

Australia was positioned third on the list of countries in the region in terms of external storage revenue generated, with $174 million, behind China, on $230 million, and leader South Korea, with $301 million (all figures quoted are in US dollars).

Trailing HP in overall market share for the region was EMC, which was overtaken by HP for the first time in the SAN (Storage Area Network) segment, with 17 per cent of the total market share. EMC was closely followed by IBM, with 16.1 per cent. Making up the leading five vendors were HDS, with 13.2 percent, and Sun Microsystems, with 10.8 per cent.
