Twin strides for Network Appliance

Twin strides for Network Appliance

It's been a busy week for network storage solution provider Network Appliance, with the announcements that it is to broaden its support for IBM's lotus applications, as well as release a new iSCSI-enabled storage appliance.

Firstly, on the matter of its increased support for Lotus, Network Appliance is to focus in particular on IBM's new enterprise e-mail solution, called IBM Lotus Workplace Messaging, which coupled with NetApp SnapManager for Lotus Domino software and other Network Appliance storage solutions, will offer users data management for day-to-day operations in IBM Lotus environments.

According to Ken Bisconti, vice president of messaging solutions at IBM Lotus Software, the announcement underscores Network Appliance's commitment to IBM Lotus and highlights the proven efficacy of Lotus applications on NetApp in large-scale enterprises.

"Storage is a critical element to consider when preparing for growth in enterprise application environments, especially when infrastructure costs are under great scrutiny. Solutions from both IBM and NetApp demonstrate a shared commitment to offer IT managers powerful and cost-effective platforms for managing their enterprise data."

Lotus Workplace Messaging is built for organisations to easily extend enterprise e-mail to users who are currently without a dedicated workspace or e-mail access.

The other news from NetApp is that its new iSCSI-enabled storage appliance - the first of a new product line targeting remote offices and workgroups for backup – is soon to be made available.

The NetApp FAS250, which will run on NetApp's Data Ontap software, has a file server engine with a storage enclosure behind it. The entry level device supports both Internet Small Computer Systems Interface (iSCSI) and network-attached storage protocols.

It will be available through NetApp's direct sales force, systems integrators and distribution partners and will be priced from US$15,000 to US$30,000 depending on storage capacity and software.
