HP simplifies portal for TAFE institute

Hewlett Packard is to help more than 45,000 students and staff at Melbourne's Chisholm Institute to gain easier access to a range of online educational and administrative services through the implementation of a new Web portal.

HP Services is to implement the technology infrastructure behind the Institute's portal, taking the disparate information applications currently used by the Institute - which is one of the largest TAFE training providers in Victoria – and integrating them into a common environment.

By doing so, Chisholm's teaching staff will find it easier to update components of the Web site, such as course content, while students will be able to customise their educational package online.

"What (Chisholm) wanted was a combination of good database capability, and a multi phasing approach that was going to make second and third phase development of the portal much easier for Chisholm when that time arrived," said Philip Attard, director for strategy marketing at HP.

"Now the portal can cope with the growth of services Chisholm intends to offer to students, making it a lot easier for students to access those services. It also makes it a lot easier for the Chisholm staff to change the look and feel of the Web site and keep it fresh, otherwise people would not go back to it," he added.

Ross Marshallsea, manager of information technology and telecommunications at Chisholm Instutute, said the portal implemented by HP far outstripped the existing Web, which he said was complex and time consuming for staff to maintain and update.

"HP services designed the perfect strategy, bringing together all the components, including hardware, software, printing and desktops, to achieve Chisholm Institute's objectives."
