Hitachi and LSI Logic team up

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies and LSI Logic have announced a plan to coordinate their product development and to deliver new Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) technology.

Under the terms of the agreement, they will share design implementations, the results of performance testing and debug information.

LSI Logic said that it would use its Fusion messaging platform to speed development and Hitachi would integrate its 3GB per second Serial Attached SCSI hard disk products in to a range of storage products.

"Having hard disk drive plug compatibility for both SAS and SATA will allow enterprise users to confidently continue to leverage SCSI technology, its scalability and robust reliability," said David Steele, the products director at LSI.

The SAS physical layer is compatible with the Serial ATA, which will enable users to choose between either SAS or SATA hard disk drives. This is likely to be the next step in the development of SCSI and will deliver 3GB/s data transfer rates.
