Still more drive for Quantum

According to Quantum, its new Value DLT will span the mid and high ends of the low end market, plus all of the midrange market. In turn, the SDLT Roadmap will stretch capacity to 2.4TB by 2006, with a new SDLT600 being offered in the US around the middle of 2003. This model boasts 600GB and 64 MB/sec compressed.

For users seeking to upgrade from low-end models, such as the vs80 Benchmark, compatibility is not an issue, as the vs80 can be read on the SDLT 320. This makes the Value DLT line perfect for entry-level automation as well as direct attached storage (DAS) and network attached storage (NAS), SDLT for enterprise automation and storage area network (SAN) configuration.

Quantum asserted that its new drives placed SDLT ahead of their most direct competitor, LTO, citing a release issued in late January by Freeman Reports. According to this report, the introduction of SDLT made Quantum the market leader in each quarter of 2002, when pitted against the five leading super drive vendors. The catalyst for the swell in Quantum's revenue was attributed to the acquisition of Benchmark, a decision that the Enterprise Storage Group says "made a great deal of senseā€¦a very smart, strategic move."

Industry test centre Open Bench Labs ran tests under both Linux and the Windows 2000 server. In both the native and data throughput tests, the SDLT 320 outperformed first generation LTO tape drives, with the net result showing the SDLT to be a very fast tape drive with a reliable and densely packed media cartridge. The tests simulate actual business conditions in a large company, helping potential customers understand how the SDLT 320 drive performs demanding functions such as throughput and data retrieval.
