IBM dash to the board

The dash board concept continues to grow in popularity in the storage market. IBM is the latest vendor to release a storage management dash board. IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager is a Java based application that works across all storage types and any hardware.

The application offers a set of automated tools for measuring capacity, availability, performance and managing storage assets.

Steve Burke, the regional manager for Tivoli Software in Australia and New Zealand said of the new application, "Tivoli Storage Resource Manager addresses the growing complexity of storage management. It provides an enterprise view of storage environments and automates complex tasks."

Over 300 predefined reports can be gathered within the application. IBM claims any storage hardware in any network, whether direct attached, network attached or a storage area network (SAN), from any vendor can be accessed, managed and reported on from the dash board. IBM claim the dash board supports the broadest range of operating systems, including their own DB2, Oracle and Sybase.

A function within the application allows the end user to charge back departments who use large amounts of storage space.

IBM Tivoli Storage Resource Manager is the first new application to come from IBM's recent acquisition of TrellisSoft(Read article). IBM acquired TrelliSoft because of its expertise in this area. The dash board was created using parts of TrelliSoft product line and developments from the IBM Tivoli labs.
