Console to control SANs

A new console has been announced by Brocade Communications Systems and Hewlett-Packard. The announcement is an expansion of their global partnership.

The two companies are working together to enable OpenView Storage Area Manager customers to easily manage Brocade switches across multiple fabrics for common tasks like configuration management, firmware download, license management, sequenced reboot, end-to end performance monitoring, real time health monitoring, and zonemanagement. In addition, the recent announcement between Brocade and Emulexwill enable HP OpenView Storage Area Manager to access information frommultiple Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) without requiring a software agent on eachserver.

"As SANs increase in size and complexity, simplified fabric and storagemanagement becomes a more critical concern for customers. Through thecollaboration with Brocade, HP OpenView Storage Area Manager, already aleading solution for managing mixed-vendor environments, further expands itscapabilities," said Bob Schultz, the vice president of Worldwide Marketing at HPNetwork Storage Solutions. "HP OpenView Storage Area Manager customers canmanage ninety percent of the installed enterprise storage systems and nowthe vast majority of installed Fibre Channel switches with a unified tool, increasing their operating effectiveness and efficiency."

In addition, a standards-based development announced separately todaybetween Brocade and Emulex will extend the intelligence in the SAN fabric toenable end-to-end SAN fabric manageability for both the switchinginfrastructure and HBAs as one SAN fabric through HP OpenView Storage AreaManager. Because this integration aggregates the elements of the fabric andreduces the need for agents, it will simplify time-consuming managementtasks, such as HBA firmware distribution.

"The HP OpenView Storage Area Manager solution, combined with theintelligence delivered by the Brocade SAN infrastructure, will allow ourmutual customers to grow their SANs while simplifying the SAN managementprocess," said John Jones, Brocade Regional Sales Director Australia and NewZealand.
