A 'plug-n-play' future following mega-merger

The recent merger between Veritas and Seagate Software NSMG will result in the development of heterogeneous storage management solutions.

When Veritas Software acquired Seagate Software's Network and Storage Management Group (NSMG) for US$2.7 billion, it represented the second biggest software acquisition behind the IBM/Lotus deal which took place two years ago.

Under the acquisition, which was completed on June 1, Seagate Software NSMG, including its employees, products and offices, will become part of Veritas, which will now stand as one of the industry's largest independent storage management software vendors.

Kevin Bush, US-based product management director with Veritas who visited Sydney to announce the completion of the acquisition, said "there is little overlap between the two companies and the two combined will outdo competitors 3 to 1 in terms of developments, marketing and sales."

Under phase one of its integration plans, Veritas has released a new version of its Global Data Manager which allows for consolidated management for homogeneous backup systems.

Greg Wyman, Seagate Software's regional sales director, said the new company will look towards establishing plug-n-play solutions and will leverage the existing distribution model in Australia and New Zealand.

With the merger, Veritas has released a new technology for enterprise-class application storage management and will offer enterprise customers the ability to scale their storage management solutions.

Under phase one of its integration strategy, Veritas has announced the release of its Veritas Global Data Manager which centralises management of enterprise-level Veritas NetBackup for Unix and Windows NT, and distributed-level Veritas Backup Exec for Windows NT. The new version 3.2 is priced at $8,064.

In related news, Veritas has also released new versions of its NetBackup and Backup Exec software products. NetBackup now includes enhanced support for storage area networks (SANs), non-distruptive database support, automated disaster recovery and the next generation of NetBackup JAVA and Windows NT interfaces. The latest version of Backup Exec features enhanced agents for Microsoft SQL 7 Server and Exchange Server and an added agent for Lotus Domino.

Backup Exec for Windows NT, Small Business Server Edition version 7.3 is also available. It provides support for the newly released Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5.
