Exabyte delivers a storm with new SAN initiative

By Hannah Birtles

Exabyte has announced its entry into the storage area networks (SAN) arena, with a new network storage management initiative known as NetStorM.

This combines automated Arrowhead tape libraries with built-in fibre channel connectivity, fibre channel networking and end-to-end management software.

It uses Exabyte's Arrowhead tape libraries; Exabyte's FC12, FC-SCSI managed routers; third-party fibre channel networking hardware and new Java-based NetStorM management software. The solution allows central control from a single console and is Web-enabled to allow remote management from anywhere on the network.

The NetStorM initiative from Exabyte provides a full end to end storage area network environment.

Initial implementations range from small managed backup networks to enterprise architectures, SAN backup and archive solutions.

A SAN is a high-bandwidth, reliable network dedicated to, and optimised for, data storage-related traffic. It is typically comprised of five major elements, managed SAN-ready storage subsystems, high-bandwidth fibre channel connectivity, fibre channel networking, SAN management software and SAN application software. NetStorM is designed to combine all five of these elements into a complete solution, with the aim of developing an umbrella of certified products and services that will offer a distinct advantage in, implementing and supporting SAN architectures.

Exabyte will deliver NetStorM through select certified reseller and system integration partners. All solutions can be tailored to individual customer requirements.

Vendors currently supporting NetStorM currently include BROCADE, Computer Associates, Emulex, Gadzoox, QLogic and Vixel.
