NetApp opens up API suite to developers

Enterprise storage solutions provider Network Appliance says its decision to provide "open access" to its Manage ONTAP suite of APIs (application programming interfaces) underlines its commitment to enabling flexible, interoperable management solutions for network storage environments.

"Offering the robust power of Data ONTAP to developers through the Manage ONTAP API suite allows us to more tightly integrate our storage solutions with the world's leading application and storage management providers," says Mark Santora, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Network Appliance.

Santora believes that Network Appliance differs from other vendors in the same space in terms of openness.

"In contrast to other storage vendors who closely guard APIs and enter into elaborate agreements for API exchange, Network Appliance is creating a fully open program.  Enterprise customers gain significant benefits from tightly integrated solutions today, as they await the proliferation of SMI-S and CIM-compliant solutions for managing their heterogeneous storage environments."

Early adopters of the Manage ONTAP APIs include leading storage management vendors such as Computer Associates, Fujitsu Softek, TeraCloud and Veritas.

The Manage ONTAP API Suite comprises a rich collection of APIs that will allow companies to create value-added applications for NetApp storage appliances and enhance the breadth of integrated solutions offered to customers.
