Seagate Intros Fast, Energy Efficient HDD’s

By Greg McNevin

November 5, 2008: Hot on the heels of Samsung’s new 50GB, energy-saving enterprise solid state disk, Seagate has introduced it’s latest family of “green” enterprise hard drives, the 15,000 RPM, 2.5”, SAS 2.0 Savvio 15K.2.

The company has dubbed the Savvio 15K.2 the world's “fastest, greenest enterprise hard drive”, claiming it delivers the industry’s highest hard drive performance and reliability as well as adding a self-encrypting drive option.

Part of Seagate’s new Unified Storage architecture which converges disk drive interfaces, form factors, and security features into a common platform, the Savvio comes in 146GB and 73GB flavours with 6GB/s SAS 2.0 interfaces.

Seagate claims this enables larger topologies, 100 percent faster data throughput and higher signal strength over greater distances, making the family ideal for RAID configurations. The Savvio 15K.2 HDD is also the first small form factor 15K enterprise self-encrypting drive that uses Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) government-grade encryption, enabling protection of information throughout a drive’s lifecycle and especially upon retirement when the drive leaves the data centre.

As for its “green” credentials, Seagate’s has included its PowerTrim technology, enabling the drives to dynamically reduce power consumption up to 70 percent compared to conventional 3.5-inch 15,000-rpm drives.
