Hitachi Rolls out SSDs for Universal Storage Platform

December 17, 2008: Solid state disk (SSD) technology appears to be gaining speed by the day, with Hitachi becoming the latest to announce the general availability of flash storage devices or its Universal Storage Platform V and VM.

The company says that its combining SSDs with its world-class virtualised storage services platform will provide exceptional performance to business-critical applications, with significantly improved utilisation and reduced consumption of power and cooling.

“The integration of flash-based SSDs on the Hitachi USP V and VM validates IDC’s prediction that this class of storage will become more viable for mainstream storage as enterprise data environments become more diversified,” said Jeff Janukowicz, research manager, solid state drives & HDD components at IDC. “We forecast SSD adoption to increase more than 70 percent on a compound annual basis through 2012, with enterprise storage applications playing a key role for I/O-intensive applications.”

Hitachi says that it is offering SSD storage options as an option to compliment its traditional hard drives, putting high-transaction, frequently-used data on flash storage, while moving less frequently accessed data to lower tiers, which “translates into greater business productivity and lower OPEX costs”, according to Roberto Basilio, vice president storage platforms product management for Hitachi Data Systems.
