Brocade switches to HP for assistance

Dec 21, 2004: Brocade's SilkWorm 3250 switch has been integrated with HP Storage Works' SAN Starter Kits to simplify SAN deployment and administration to end users so that they can have easier access to storage networks.

It is designed to be flexible at the foundation for entry-level SANs and is ideal for key SAN solutions such as easing email storage growth and streamlining data backup.

Rick Steffens, the vice president and general manager of storage area networks at HP talked about how useful the switch will be after it has been integrated with the new HP StorageWorks Modular Smart Array family.

"As industry leaders in the storage networking market, HP and Brocade are working together to simplify SAN implementations and lower the total cost of ownership for SAN solutions.

"Together with Brocade we're providing a hardware foundation for business growth and future solutions that will help customers achieve maximum investment investment protection."

The starter kits are the first based on the HP StorageWork MSA1500 disk array, and according to HP and Brocade, is the industry's first disk array to enable the concurrent attachment of both SCSI and SATA disk enclosures behind a single controller shelf.

The HP StorageWorks MSA 1500 allows a two-node SAN to be created for Microsoft Windows, Linux or NetWare operating environments.

Combined with the 8-port Brocade SilkWorm SAN switch, this will allow organisations to manage more data with less staffing, while also improving the computing infrastructure utilisation for better performance.

The Brocade switches also allow systems to be upgraded with software without interrupting the critical flow of data, which means that end users can upgrade to include higher value services, such as performance monitoring increased security.
