Hitachi Unveils Greener Data Centre
April 23, 2008: Hitachi Data Systems has unveiled what it has dubbed the industry’s greenest enterprise data centre in Yokohama, Japan.
The company says it has broken new ground in data centre design and development, and has achieved a 1.6 PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) rating by The Green Grid — the lowest of any data centre in its class.
Located in Yokohama, Japan, the new state-of-the-art data centre’s architecture has been designed to offer the highest levels of energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions by 20 percent, while also lowering IT management costs.
The facility also features cutting-edge products such as thermal hydraulic cooling devices, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems and highly advanced power supply converters that have been designed to work in concert to contribute significant power, cooling and space benefits.
According to David Vellante, president and CEO of IT Centrix and co-founder of the Wikibon Project, Hitachi has the most comprehensive and fully implemented corporate green plan in place.
Vellante adds that measures such as the implementation of virtualisation, thin provisioning and support for external devices that spin down, have helped this generation of Hitachi hardware – deployed in the new data centre - reduce power consumption by 63% over previous generations. He cites this as a substantial milestone that other industry players should try to emulate.
