Novell Brings ILM to SuSE

April 3, 2007: Novell will soon be giving SuSE Linux customers greater storage flexibility by packaging its information lifecycle management technology with Open Enterprise Server 2.

Previously known as Shadow Volumes and now dubbed Dynamic Storage Technology (DST), Novell says the ILM technology takes large amounts of file data stored on Linux file servers and aggregates it under a shadow volume.

From Excel and Word documents to PDFs and more the software takes a policy based approach to examining and moving files that have not been modified for 30 days or more off expensive storage without disrupting workflow.

While ILM technology such as Dynamic Storage is nothing new, Novell says that until now there has been no equivalent for Open Enterprise Server 2, its hybrid technology in which NetWare runs as a guest operating system on SuSE Linux Enterprise Server.

Open Enterprise Server 2 and its shiny new ILM capabilities are currently in beta testing, Novell expects the final version to be available around Q2 this year.
