Computer Associates embraces open source world

Computer Associates is gearing itself up to welcome the community of open-source with open arms to help it build a new line of management software.

CA is planning to dedicate a huge amount of money into developing its commitment to open source, which will be announced at the CA World user conference near the end of this month.

Mark Barrenechea, the senior vice president of product development at Computer Associates, who used to be a former Oracle executive, said that the open-source code will play a role in the company's product development plans, especially in systems management software.

CA hopes to draw attention from its recent financial and management setbacks by announcing this new strategy.

This follows CA's recent purchase of SCO licenses for intellectual property, allowing them to run Linux without fear of SCO legal action, but CA disagrees with SCO's tactics of intimidation.

Sam Greenblatt, senior vice president and architect of CA's Linux Technology Group said that the whole world is going to unite around a single operating system, and he believes it is going to be Linux.

CA is one of many other companies which have invested millions of dollars into open source. Others include IBM, Sun Microsystems and Novell.

One of the reasons for the trend is because companies can carry out research and development more cheaply by using code and concepts, which are already available in the open source world.
