Aussie company combats data theft

Softection, an Australian business technology start up, is set to launch software this week with the sole mission of protecting critical information against theft, abuse and misuse.

Digital Asset Protection 1.01 deals with a growing corporate problem through prevention rather than punishment. Softection's software makes proactive use of organisational businesses by assigning hierarchies to people, machines and files.

The idea was inspired by cases over the years of senior level executives leaving their jobs and taking crucial company data with them for their personal advantage, at the expense of the business that they left.

CharlesReed, CEO of Softection explained why there is a need for this level of protection. "The danger is when people walk out with important names, phone numbers and especially renewal agreements. In the past executives have cut into deals after they have left a company because they know inside information which should be confidential.

"The software is implemented at the server level, and the rules are applied the highest and lowest levels. For instance, board members can be prevented from cut and pasting information, printing out or even email documents on. Information can also have a time limit set to it too. A document can become unavailable after 30 days, if necessary."

All of these rules can be set and controlled by the HR or IT department, to keep track over the security of information.

In addition, information on laptops can be protected too. For instance, if somebody leaves their laptop in a taxi, the data will not fall into the wrong hands if a certain time limit function is set on the computer.

Users can set a rule whereby they are required to register the laptop into a docking station every 12 hours. If the laptop is not registered, then the computer will automatically delete all of the information on system.

This solution tracks data as it is created and amended, providing an audit trail and evidence that demonstrates regulatory compliance for storage an encryption of data.

Security threats, together with increasing regulatory compliance demands, and the need for secure but open systems to support partners and stakeholders, raise the issue of internal data security to the highest levels.
