Anti-phishing forces cast a wider net

Network Appliance has joined forces with Trend Micro, Secure Computing, Symantec, Websense and Webwasher to combat ever increasing phishing attacks which have been hampering businesses for some time now.

The joint team will develop combined Internet access and security (IAS) solutions as a safeguard for blocking URLs of known phishing Web sites by adding these URLs to a 'computer crime' database and spam-blocking scam emails.

NetApp has also published an advisory to help customers with knowledge of how to create better methods for defending themselves against phishing attacks on the Internet.

In its advisory, it says there is an increasing awareness that you just don't send personal data such as passwords or bank accounts over the Internet, but insists that organisations and individuals need a higher level of proactive protection.

Working with the FBI, FTC and local law enforcement agencies, IAS collects URLs of known phishing Web sites and provides them to the police for regular analysis.

Meetings are carried out with local police computer crime departments to exchange knowledge, get feedback, and develop increasing expertise in detecting phishing scams.

NetApp believes that the by blocking a large percentage of attempts to visit phishing scam sites helps to protect employees from divulging personal data to criminals.

In Gartner Inc.'s survey, 'Phishing Victims Likely Will Suffer Identity Theft Fraud', May 2004), of 5000, US online adults, 57 million US adults (41 percent of the population) have, or think they have received a 'phishing' attack email. Nearly all of 92 percent occurred in the past 12 months. This joint initiative aims to turn the tide of this trend.
