Veritas solution keeps closer eye on storage

Veritas made another a big step towards its utility computing vision by releasing new software products, which will provide companies with full transparency into IT resources, service levels and costs.

The two new applications are called CommandCentral Storage 4.0 and CommandCentral Availability 4.0. These solutions will allow administrators to discover storage assets, set up policies for management and report on the use.

Information gathered within CommandCentral storage is managed by CommandCentral Service, which analyses the storage infrastructure across the enterprise.

This in turn, enables IT managers to pre-determine what the service levels are and how much it costs per user, department or application.

Nancy Hurley, senior analyst at Enterprise Storage Group said. "Veritas is creating a heterogeneous software solution to enable utility computing. The company's solutions address key areas important to IT leaders - ensuring that applications are performing at the highest levels and meeting the needs of customers worldwide for unprecedented levels of data availability.

"The ability to automate across servers, storage and application will be crucial to realising the promise of the utility computing model. This breadth and heterogeneity is important because utility computing, in its final form, requires a software layer that coordinates the whole infrastructure and allows it to operate as a single entity while meeting a spectrum of different requirements."

Veritas has also announced the availability of MicroMeasure, obtained through its acquisition of Ejasent. This will be the first general-purpose software to enable usage-based metering, cost allocation and charge-back billing of all physical and logical components within a data centre - including storage, server and application consumption by specific users and departments.

By the end of the year, this technology will be delivered as part of a future version of Veritas CommandCentral service.
