Topspin increases server flexibility

Topspin Communications has boosted its server virtualisation suite by releasing VFrame software, which it claims is the first open solution for utility computing.

The VFrame server virtualisation software suite allows customers to choose whatever industry-standard servers, storage and management tools they prefer and integrate these components effortlessly across Topspin's standards-based server switching infrastructure.

It embeds policy rules and intelligence into the server switch, allowing it to be programmed with the policies it needs to determine when and how to create virtual servers out of shared resources.

Ross Schibler, chief technology officer at Topspin said. "With VFrame technology, Topspin customers can now deploy new applications in a fraction of the time, re-purpose servers instantly from one function to another, and respond rapidly to server or network failures. This contributes to lower management costs and dramatically reduced downtime."

Burlington Coat Factory currently uses Topspin's VFrame software in conjunction with their server switches. Mike Prince, CIO of the Burlington Coat Factory, said. "Topspin's server virtualisation solution gives us all of the advantages of a utility data centre, plus standards-based price/performance, significant scalability, and the flexibility to choose our own servers and storage. To meet our growing application requirements with reduced spending, we required a solution that combined the price/performance curves of commodity components with the ability to do more with less."

The software's three elements include embedded system logic, which receives, interprets and enforces policies; middleware APIs and a developer kit for partners or customers to create their own management or provisioning tools; and direct software that centralises policy intelligence for system wide-decision-making.
