IIA create working group to tackle online fraud

The Internet Industry Association (IIA) has formed a specialist industry working group to investigate the feasibility of a national authentication response to tackle the growing problem of online fraud.

"Recent events involving online phishing exploits have highlighted the paucity of current authentication options and their application for internet users in Australia," said IIA chief executive, Peter Coroneos.

He added: "Left unaddressed, online fraud has the potential to seriously undermine the uptake and usage of e-commerce. Internet users will invariably weigh up the risks of transacting online versus the convenience. We need to tip the balance back in favour of security, trust and confidence.

"Identity theft looms as the next big issue to confront the industry. It is incumbent on us to pre-empt problems by identifying and fast tracking means by which people can be better protected."

An IIA Authentication Virtual Taskforce has been formed to examine implementation options for better authentication on an industry-wide basis within Australia. Members of the taskforce, which will formally convene this Wednesday, comprise industry experts across various sectors of e-commerce.

"The common interest is in coming up with something that will have widespread public acceptance, is capable of implementation across a range of online environments, and that works," said Coroneos.

"While primarily aimed at B2C (business to consumer) commerce, the work may be of potentially wider application. For example, it may advance current age verification mechanisms and other interactions requiring greater trust - while stopping short of outright user identification which is not essential to the outcome and in any case raises legitimate privacy concerns which can be avoided without prejudicing the success of the scheme."
