HP offers standardised flexible products

HP has released new standardised products which will simplify and the reduce the cost of upgrading hardware for Enterprises in the future.

The new systems, software and services will allow enterprises to make small component changes to improve their performance, instead of having to completely change the whole system.

The HP products will more compatible with a range of different industry standard components.

Some of these new products include:

1. HP Integrity servers based on Intel Itanium 2 processors.

2. Enhanced line of HP 9000 servers powered by PA-RISC based PA-8800 processors.

3. HP Storage Works tape libraries.

4. HP NonStop Advanced Architecture based on Intel Itanium 2 processors.

5. Refreshed HP 9000 line with the next generation of PA-RISC processors, the PA-8800 dual processor module.

These share common components with the Integrity server line, providing smooth customer evolution to future platforms, increased capacity and scalability.

Steve Williamson, the Business Critical Systems manager for Hewlett Packard said that the standardisation will make life a lot easier for enterprises: "The IT industry is now becoming like the car industry. We are now offering customers products which are compatible across the board, So that single components can be replaced and upgraded without having to replace the whole hardware system. Similar to the car industry, in terms of changing a worn out tyre. You can just change the tyre, instead of having to change the whole car to match a new tyre.

"We can start using standardisation within our own product group, so that we will be able to use an industry standard component, like an Intel chip in a socket, and be able to replace that chip with a PA-RISC, if necessary. This will reduce cost massively. In the past, people haven't able to swap from an Intel system to a PA-RISC system, even though they all use industry standard components. Our products such as the PA-8800 and the majority of the products we are releasing now actually allow you to take industry standard components and replace them with other industry standard components.

"Another examples - an enterprises which uses an Unix system on a PA-8800 will be able to replace it with Windows by inserting an Intel processor to allow this to happen."

So customers will be able to use storage hardware systems more flexibly in the future, which lower the cost and time it takes to improve the business agility.
