The Blu-ray group has received a timely boost in its efforts to establish the next generation of optical disk storage technology, with HP and Dell both endorsing the new technology.

The thumbs-up was given by the two storage heavyweights at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The Blu-ray technology is currently being used by a number of consumer electronics firms, including Samsung, LG and Sony in the production of new prototype recording devices, similar to DVD players but with far greater disk capacity and technology that is designed to take full advantage of HDTV (High Definition Television).

While the main focus of the Blu-ray technology is on the consumer market, at least one enterprise optical storage provider has utilised the technology and the enhanced capacity it provides over infrared laser technology to great effect.

As reported in the September/October issue of

last year, Plasmon has come up with a UDO (Ultra Density Optical) drive for the professional archiving market, allowing users to triple their storage capacity without having to replace their existing storage libraries.
