New Legato MD says company needs to get up Down Under

The newly appointed – and refreshingly frank – managing director of Legato Systems Australia/New Zealand says the storage vendor needs to lift its game in this part of the world to stay in line with the progress the company has made overseas.

Stephen Lloyd Jones, the successor to Scott Phillips, who will remain at the company in an executive capacity, told IDM he was excited by the challenge that lies ahead.

"I think it's a fantastic opportunity. Legato has been expanding overseas very, very quickly. My view throughout the whole process of engagement is that Legato is taking a renewed interest in Australia, as although they've done reasonably well here, they haven't done quite as well as they could have, in respect of what they have done in the rest of the world."

Jones, who most recently was director and general manager of MRO Software Australia/New Zealand, was fulsome in his praise for the way the US-based company has maintained its faith in the Australian market by ramping up the operation rather than going the other way.

"Many American companies would shut down the operation or downsize it drastically, but what Legato has chosen to do here is to invest in the operation here and enhance the skillsets of the people here, so that we can assume our rightful position in the market. I don't think it's out of the question that we can double our revenue – I think that's a real possibility."

The new boss also wasted no time in outlining his initial aims to help achieve such growth.

"I think there are two main goals. We really have to look at the way we handle and treat our partners. I think we do a reasonable job at the moment but we can do better. It is also important that we help corporations that are interested in improving corporate governance – things like email storage and retrieval and content management."
