EMC bullish about Symmetrix

EMC bullish about Symmetrix

At the local launch of its Symmetrix storage solution, EMC Australia was bullish about the product's abilities and the affect it is going to have on the Australian market. Symmetrix will change the way end users utilise storage and EMC claims that rival vendors will have to move over to the form of architecture that EMC has created.

To say the local EMC team was excited would be an understatement, "It's not often we are part of something so big," said Clive Gold the director of integrated marketing at EMC said. Adding, "When you change an industry there is also a lot of debate - the debate will be about high end storage."

Steve Redman, the managing director of the local branch office described Symmetrix Direct Matrix Architecture (DMX) solutions as the final piece in the puzzle for EMC's complete storage offerings. "This is not a 20 per cent improvement, this is between a 200 and a 1000 per cent improvement," he said. Getting onto the current US led theme of going to war, Mr Redman described previous capacity increases as taking 100 soldiers to the battle and then your nearest rival (Hitachi was mentioned) brings 105, now you bring 1000 soldiers to the battle. "It really is that far away in performance," he said.

Backing up the war cries will be a road show and a tour of 100 Australian customers to demonstrate DMX's abilities.

"DMX is like having your own personal highway. If you look at past architectures you always come to a queue, just like driving to work," said Mark Heers the product marketing manager. (Click here to read full story on the DMX technology)

EMC feels the belief that Australia is a terrorist target is fuelling disaster recovery demand, which will aid demand for the DMX.

"It [disaster recovery] becomes an economical option and you can have disaster recovery (DR) outside the data centre. This will change the market in Australia," said Mr Redman. "You can now have DR in the closet. Everyone wants DR, but the cost of building a data centre is prohibitive. With the DMX architecture you can have DR," Mr Redman said.

EMC believes that its rivals will have to move in the same direction if they are to compete with EMC at all. Mr Redman said, "They cannot stay in the market on bus."
